A Study on the Bone Marrow Involvement of Metastatic Tumor

Abstract
The results of examination of 204 bone marrow aspirates and biopsies of 199 patients with known or suspected malignant tumors are presented.
Of the 199 patients, 81(40.7/) showed metastatic tumor. Of these, metastases were most frequent in stomach carcinoma (84.6/), breast carcinoma(80.0%), neuroblastoma (61.5 /) , Ewing¢¥s sarcoma (44.4 `0), hepatoblastoma (16.7 %) , small cell carcinoma (g.1 /) , others (16.7 /) and unknown primaries (62. 5%) .
The bone marrow biopsy was superior to the aspirate in finding metastatic tumor (98/ vs 88/).
Both extensive tumor involvement and moderate myelofiblosis were presented in over half of all positive biopsies.
Osseous remodelling was found in over 70,0/c of biopsies with metastases though either bone formation or resorption or mixed.
Metastases presented in the bone marrow without any abnormalities being recognized in bone scans, radiographic] picture, serum chemistry or hematological parameters.
This study demonstrates the usefulness of combining biopsy and smear examinations for increased detection of unsuspected ;bone marrow metastases in staging of malignant tumors.
